Tutorial 15 – Painting German Red Oxide Finish for WW2 Tanks

The Germans (and many other countries) apply a red oxide primer to their AFVs before the actual overall color (either German Grey or Dark Yellow) gets sprayed on. Towards the end of the war, due to the scarcity of paint, or trying to rush vehicles into action, some AFVs were seen in their red primer finish. As such, it is an interesting paint finish found in very late war vehicles. The primer would also tend to be a shade of different colors, depending on the primer batch used, and the effects of sitting around a factory floor or storage facility. This would range from almost dark brown to pinkish red. Creating this look in miniature is a challenge. For this project, I used Vallejo German Red Oxide AFV Painting System 78.411.

This set comes with 5 colors and one satin varnish.

First, we start with a light grey primer #601. You can also substitute this with Tamiya Sky Grey if you are not using this kit.
Next, the under shade of Hull Red #039 is applied to seams and joint areas where shadows and plate endings may be.
Next, a more uniform coating of Armour Brown RAL8017 is applied. Alternate color would be Tamiya Red Brown. XF-64
Then, very targeted application of First Light #253 on high lights, middle of panels, and top side surfaces. A substitute color like Tamiya NATO Brown XF68 can also be used.
Final touch with Brown RLM26 #105, which is the lightest for highlights like small raised details. These can also be dry-brushed on. A substitute would be an oil or acrylic like Burnt Sienna.
Finally, the paint job is sealed under a satin varnish. Either use the one from the kit, or here I have used my own Satin Varnish mix.
